Even if you followed no form of political or social activism, you would have to be blind to miss the growing feeling of unease as it filtered its way down the fashion catwalks and into the mainstream. From Dior's now cult 'We should all be feminists' t-shirts to just about everything to help funds for the newly cut Planned Parenthood, the general feeling of needing to assert individual power has never been stronger.
So, what's this got to do with semi-precious stones? Well, to put it simply, for years these pretty little pieces have had another use; one of protection and prevention, and with the likes of Victoria Beckham and Riccardo Tisci using semi-precious stones on a daily basis, it was only a matter of time before they entered the mainstream. Speaking on his recent use of agate in his Givenchy show, Tisci said: "Women are fighting for power, not only in America but everywhere in the world, I wanted to do something more sensual and more powerful, and for me, that's tied to nature." Tisci's stone of choice was Agate, known for it's calming, healing and protective powers as well as giving the wearer some essential power. Another major designer finding comfort in stones is Victoria Beckham who is well known for using black tourmaline while backstage at her fashion shows. Black Tourmaline is of course used for protection, which as long as she keeps sending out winning look after winning look, she ought not to need too much.
While carrying round pieces of stones might not be the easiest way to protect yourself, the most stylish way is surely thanks to jewellery and boutiques across the world have noted interest in these stones at an all-time high - something they are attributing to world events and a subsequent desire for keeping protection near.
So, if you are feeling like you need a bit of added protection, or you just feel like wearing something pretty, here's a guide to the deeper meaning behind the stones on our site.
