The Wonderful World

This month we talk to Expat Living Fashion Editor and blog star Susannah Jaffer.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Check my phone, sadly enough! Well, I’m turning off the alarm after all so it’s just a natural progression...perhaps it’s time to get a proper clock.
A typical day for me goes something like this: After waking up I head to (read: drag myself to) a circuit training workout at 6am, and am back by 7am, feeling all the more saintly for it. I then walk my dog, make breakfast and I’m out of the house by 8:30 to get to the office. After that, there is no typical working day. I could be on a shoot, attending events, writing features or looking over designs and potential covers for the next issue.
I got into fashion by …Sending in a CV and praying for a sign! That seems so old-fashioned; nowadays people are getting hired through Instagram. Once you get the opportunity, I think it’s just all about getting your head down, doing real work and putting in the hard graft. The whole process is made much easier if you’re doing something you're passionate about.
If I knew then what I know now, I would Not sweat the small things as much. Oh, and eat less fried food.
What’s your favourite piece on your site? Probably a piece I wrote recently about shopping more sustainably.
The best thing about having my own fashion blog is …It feels nice to talk about a different side of the fashion industry outside of my usual 9 to 5 job scope! In my blog I largely talk about independent, ethical and sustainably made brands, which I don’t always get to write about in the magazine.
How would you describe your style? Eclectic and changeable, but never overly minimal. I love independent brands and boutiques, and stopped shopping in most high street chains last year.
If I could raid one person’s cupboard/ jewellery box it would be …As cliché as it sounds, probably my mum’s as her jewellery would be the most meaningful (plus I know she has a rather awesome stash tucked away in her wardrobe...)
What’s the best fashion secret you have ever learnt? It’s hardly a secret, but learning what flatters your body and sticking to it will seriously save you time and cash.
For me, no outfit is complete without … A simple sterling silver ring I bought for myself when I was probably about 15 (it’s stayed with me ever since, and my hand feels empty without it!) and either a statement necklace or earrings.
When it comes to jewellery, my mantra is …There’s nothing like a beautiful cocktail ring to perk up any outfit, whether you’re wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans combo or a slinky evening dress.
No matter how busy I am each day, I make sure that I Exercise, and remember to be grateful.
On the whole, I would say that I am …A massive work in progress, but aren’t we all!
